Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] yagowe!

***

So George is back, and I am happy. Also, I love Jack Layton.

I'm definitely watching to see what happens with this potential vote of non-confidence. I really doubt that anyone wants to force a Christmas election*, but George is right: this is the chance that the Conservatives and the NDP have both been talking about forever. If they don't use this chance to vote non-confidence in the Liberals, they're going to look very silly.

The thing is, I can see why the NDP, despite everything they've said, might not want to take down the government. They are actually in the best position they could possibly be, other than leading a majority government themselves (which, despite gains in seats and recognition, I don't think is a possibility yet). Martin needs them, desperately, in order to get anything done. As the swing vote, they're managing to dictate policy. Look at what just happened with the health care bill: Layton basically said, give us what we want on that bill and we'll support you, otherwise we're siding with the bad guys over there.

So now it just remains to be seen what Martin and the others will do. The Conservatives have the first opposition day next week, but I don't think they're likely to call for a confidence vote unless they're sure the NDP aren't backing the Liberals, despite the fact that they (and all the other opposition parties) have been saying that they're ready ever since the last election. I guess we'll see!

*There were people handing out pamphlets by the subway station this morning. I'm pretty sure they were for the Conservative candidate in my riding. I thought they weren't allowed to campaign until an election was called?

(ps. Who wants to go to a taping of the Rick Mercer Report with me? Tickets are available for these shows. We should pick one and get a group of people together.)

[livejournal.com profile] sallym, I think someone's been eavesdropping on us! Monday Report just suggested Hockey Night in Canada be replaced by Porno Night in Canada. It's still not as good as Sally and Rachel's Canadian Celebrity Makeout Hour, though.

Also, as soon as Rick Mercer said "cherry blossoms" I knew he could only be in Victoria. And now he's ranting through Beacon Hill Park! Aw.

Things I learned from Monday Report:

1. For Better or For Worse is ending sometime in the next five years.
2. Olympic gold medalist Kyle Shewfelt is very adorable.

I'm a little sad that I won't be able to watch the second half of the terrible disaster movie that I accidentally sort-of watched on Sunday, but Wednesdays are too full of TV as it is. However, my disappointment is nothing compared to my excitement that The Amazing Race starts again tonight! Yay! Another season of pretending that I could totally climb that ladder faster than anyone else.

~

It was really crowded at the gym last night; far more than usual. I had to wait for every machine, even when I shuffled my program and did some substitutions. I don't like it when it's that busy, partly because I'm a selfish whiner, but also because with that many people around I feel like I'm in a cult or something. And what is it about personal trainers that inspires people to tell them such private stuff? The woman on the bike beside me was definitely taking the 'personal' part too far.

~

If Tomato Nation disappeared, I would be very sad.

Running total of days in which I have managed to not spill yogurt on myself: Zero.

Hate!

1. UPS. Oh, so very much. They are EEEVIL and I think hold a personal grudge against me. So, my computer, my poor little broken laptop, was sent down to Florida to get a new motherboard. They send it back to me. I hear nothing from UPS. I start to panic. Eventually I get a phone call saying that they tried to deliver it, but there was no-one home. Duh, I have a job. Fuckers. So after many long phone calls in which the person on the other end of the phone enters my tracking code wrong and insists she's never heard of me, I finally manage to determine that they have my computer, and arrange for it to be delivered yesterday, meaning I have to take the day off work and not leave the house...and it never shows up. I even skipped running class! I can't afford to take more time off work in the hope that they might deign to deliver it, and their pick-up location is way the hell north, which would also require taking time off work in order to actually get there. So I don't know what I'm going to do now, other than sit here and be stressed. Update: The UPS people apparently can't read, because they came to deliver it, but couldn't figure out how to use the intercom system, even though it told them RIGHT THERE ON THE WORK ORDER WHAT TO PRESS.

2. [livejournal.com profile] vestra's computer. Because the one bonus to staying home yesterday was that I was planning on hanging out on LJ all day, except that the wee iBook refused to let me on for more than 2 minutes at a time, and even if I managed to read, I certainly couldn't comment or post. Or even read behind cuts, really. I also couldn't check my email or update my holds at the library. Bah.

3. Winter. Not that this has anything to do with anything, but I hate that it's still night when I leave for work in the morning. I mean, it's not even pretending that it's daytime out there. What's with that?

Love!

1. Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony. It's just so incredibly fantastic - listening to the TSO on Saturday night my eyes actually started watering during the second movement. (I'm not entirely sure what that means, but it happens when I listen to Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man" and Hawksley Workman's "Striptease", too. Um, yeah.)

2. Rick Mercer. But we all knew that already, right?

Apology!

1. [livejournal.com profile] sarcasma, I'm sorry I left you all alone yesterday - I tried to log on to MSN, but... (see point number 2 under Hate).

Hello.

I want chocolate right now plsthnx.

I had my second running class last night. It's been decided that it's too dark to run along the boardwalk now, which meant we ran along Queen St. I think the class should be renamed "Learn To Run And Dodge Pedestrians, or, How Not To Smack Someone Silly When They Mock You At A Traffic Light". Also a dog attempted to attach itself to my leg as we ran by, and I nearly knocked [livejournal.com profile] vestra over in my flailing to get away. I may have squealed, too.

After class we went home and had a little CBC lovefest, which [livejournal.com profile] vestra has already talked about, but I'm going to talk about, too, because it's my journal, and I can do that if I want. So there. Monday Report started up again last night, and let me just reiterate that I love Rick Mercer and want him to be beamed into my living room every night. I missed hearing someone make fun of Stephen Harper! Plus Pierre Burton (who is so very, very old - when did that happen?) showed us all the proper way to roll a joint. Hee.

Before that we had randomly turned on The Greatest Canadian, and quickly got sucked in to the piece on Tommy Douglas, father of Medicare, leader of the NDP for many years, and grandfather of Keifer Sutherland. I would like to marry him and have his socialist babies, if it weren't for the small fact that he's dead. There may be nine other choices, but how can any of them possibly be a greater Canadian than Tommy? I've already voted for him seven times, after registering with every email address I have. Democracy in action.

Let's see, what else? Oh, right, we watched a National piece on the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints, who have a freaky isolationist enclosed community in BC called Bountiful (and a few in the States), where they practice polygamy, and the girls are married off at 15 to men twice or three times their age, and people are moved around and remarried and separated from their children at the whim of the church leader. It's definitely crossed the line from religion into cult, and I think it could have a very scary ending.

Also, I watched last week's ANTM, which was not on CBC. I love it so very much, although it was pretty obvious who was getting sent home, because she got about twice as much screen time as anyone else.

1. Still sick. Blech. And unlike *some* people, I didn't even have fun getting to this state.

2. Still overwhelmed at work. There's just so much to do, I can't quite get a grip. Plus another person is now on some sort of extended leave, so that leaves just 5 of the 8 regular staff (which includes the 2 managers, who are generally off doing managerial things). Some days, my desk and my computer are just a fond memory.

3. Still in love with The O.C. Between that and Rick Mercer, Monday nights are the best ever (pathetic as that makes me).

4. Still listening to Rufus Wainwright every morning at work. I've stopped even filing it back on the shelf afterward - I just leave it on the desk for the next morning.

5. Still no DVD player. If it ever gets back from the repair shop I'm taking a day off work to watch all those things that I got for Christmas/bought for myself that are still unfinished or in their wrappers (Pirates, Buffy season 5, and unaired episodes of Firefly, I'm looking at you.

6. Still have no life. Obviously. :)

TV talk

We played a little bit of TV catch-up tonight, watching things that we taped earlier in the week. Most excitingly, we finally found time to watch The O.C. - there is nothing on that show as brilliant as the scenes with Ryan, Seth and Sandy. The three of them together are so very funny. Sadly, we got all excited at the thought of getting a new episode of Gilmore Girls and it was a repeat! Tricksy Global TV. Was it a new episode in the States and are we now just a week behind?

We also saw the first episode of Rick Mercer's new show, Monday Report. I do really love Rick Mercer. He's my snarky pretend comedian boyfriend (with a lovely accent, which is always a bonus). And I love that since it's Canadian, I actually get the political references. I'm definitely going to check it out again. Plus I think we'll try to catch a taping -- they've been promoting them all over the elevators at work.

Oh, and I watched Angel, which was fun. The show's not grabbing me like I had hoped it would this season, but I can't quite give it up. And when they don't try to give every single character a plotline in every episode it works.
