My new theory is that Aaron Sorkin is deliberately making Studio 60 as unlike a real sketch comedy as possible.

Sting and his lute? Granted, it's topical - the album just came out, or is coming out - but Dowland? Dowland? On a comedy show (or at least a comedy show soundcheck)? Not to mention that I seriously object to being forced to listen to Sting butcher those poor lute songs. Bad enough that I was forced to experience the badness at work.

But I will forgive him. Because I love the show.

I shouldn't have read this because I haven't watched it yet, but I can't not talk about Sorkin these days. Sorkin Sorkin Sorkin!

I really feel that we need to see either NONE of the sketch comedy -- have it be mysterious and offscreen and only discussed, never seen; perhaps sketch comedy is better left to the imagination, like the scary stuff in a horror movie -- or it needs to be alotalotalot better. They seem to be caught in an impossible place between "imitating SNL" and "claiming that Matt is the god of writers and Harriet is the goddess of actors".

But all bitching aside, I love it so far (again, with the caveat that I haven't seen the most recent ep) because: Sorkin!

Heh, I bet. At least it's a bit current, though -- I've been a little thrown by the guests/hosts on the other episodes, not that I bothered to look up whether they had anything new coming out that they could conceivably be promoting. I mean... Rob Reiner? What, is he going on a blitz for the Rumour Has It DVD?

Of course, it's a kind of weird situation, because it's not like they're being asked to be the musical guest for a real SNL-type show - I mean, they're not going to get that much air time, or anything. So I can see that some of the really hot groups right now wouldn't want to bother. Plus the target audience for Studio-60-the-sketch-show is different than the audience for Studio-60-the-network-behind-the-scenes-show, at least according to the data they've gathered about who is actually watching.

Yeah, I was thinking about that... certainly they aren't going to get anyone to be a musical guest who wasn't already just hanging out in LA. People who are actually launching a tour are going to be too busy. They shouldn't have trouble finding random actor/director "host" people who are around, though, should they?

No - that's just a guest star bit, with, really, even less work in some cases, depending on what they need them for. So that should be easy. Plus I imagine there's a fair amount of interest among actors in working with Sorkin.

Oddly, I am not offended by Sting singing lute songs. Sorry! I could be completely wrong, as I am not a lute song expert and I have not listened to the whole album (just the songs on his website). But...it makes me think of a poor, grungy wandering minstrel type dude. They couldn't have all had beautiful voices back then. To me it was more interesting than hearing another boring countertenor sing them....again. And hey....at least he's English :)

Picking on new CDs seems to be the order of the day at work right now. Particularly people who have massive fan bases and could not care less what we think about them. ;)

I'm a new fan, I've seen the last two episodes now.

I am really enjoying it. I'm particularly impressed with Matthew Perry. I don't think 'Chandler' when I see him on screen.

Are they pulling in viewers? I don't want to get attached to a show that's going to get the hook!

Yeah, I'm not sure about the long-term - I haven't heard any rumours of cancellation yet, but the viewer numbers are pretty low. On the other hand, those viewer are apparently generally quite rich, which is very desireable, so maybe that'll save it. :)
