Ugh. I had terrible insomnia last night - mind and pulse both racing the entire night. I tried getting up and reading, but to no avail. And then once I realized it was 2am and I was going to have to get up in 4 hours I started panicking about falling asleep and sleeping right through the alarm. I would drift off and then wake up because I couldn't hear the radio, which of course hadn't gone off. Then I finally did fall asleep, and started dreaming about the alarm, so when it did go off I couldn't even figure out what it was. And I was opening today, which meant that I really had to be on time.

So I'm a little punchy, plus there's this slight tendency to drift off in the middle of sentences. Luckily I don't really talk to anyone at work, so I should be okay.

But why is the sleep gone?

I can't read or do anything intellectually stimulating if I'm trying to get to sleep.

TV used to help, but there's usually something interesting on, which defeats the purpose.

When I had a small portable set (before the blue-screen days), I found setting it to snow helped. I heard this tip from a friend at work, who'd read about it from Hunter S. Thompson (his personal hero). The white noise from the snow and hiss makes a good tranquilizer for the nervous system if one is wired or mentally busy. I'd lie on the couch with the channel on 99 or something and let it hypnotize you.

If I'm not asleep within a half hour, I get up and try writing or doing something else productive.
