This is an interesting article on technologies/tools that the author thinks will go the way of the fax machine. The one that jumped out to me was his belief in the death of email (which he also wrote about in another article, linked from that one). My instinctive reaction was a hearty "pshaw!", but then I thought about the fact that because of things like Facebook, there are people I might want to invite to things, whose emails I don't even have. On the other hand, from my experience IM use seems to be dying out, although maybe it's just that no-one wants to talk to me. :)

I'm slightly petrified of falling behind the curve on things like this, but it feels like things change so fast! I am old and can't keep up.

Kids tell me daily that Email is just for old people. Text, IM, and other instant communications are 'in'. Am I the last person in Canada without a cell phone? (My Dad has one. for work.)

Facebook etc. is useful only if all your friends are in the same place - if half your friends are facebook and half are myspace, you're just screwed. So I don't think social networking sites are the answer, as they just breed homogenity. Hmm.

I want to talk to you, but I use yahoo IM and meebo, and you don't, I think.

My dad's got one for work, but it's HUGE. Like, as seen on the Xfiles huge... I laughed and laughed...

Some of his ideas seem a little farfetched, though. Classrooms? Uh, maybe for some college courses. But for anyone K-12, that's not going to happen until all parents suddenly work from home and have enough time off that they wouldn't have to hire a babysitter to watch their kid while it does classes on the internet.

I have to admit to regularly using Facebook to contact people I know in professional circles, its easier than digging through e-mail or websites to find out how to contact them, especially when in my daily routine, I check Facebook before work e-mail. :)

No IM here, or rather, I haven't bothered getting it here. I do like G-chat though.
