While I'm on the subject of books, does anyone know of a site where I can track new releases from my favourite authors? I'm looking for something that will email me when certain authors have a new book coming out, because I'm just not in bookstores as much as I used to be, and I keep finding out about things months after they've come out.

Many of the publishing company's websites have an author tracker. You can also check out Publishers Weekly for release dates, though I'm not sure if you need a subscription or not to access that info on the website.

I've noticed Amazon.com does this if I've purchased a book by an author, but its not foolproof.

Amazon.com allows you to set up alerts with an RSS feed... I haven't done it yet, but my techy coworker raves about it.
