Quick, before I turn into an icicle: tell me something you love about winter.

The smell, if that makes any sense. It reeks downtown in the middle of the summer.

But that's about all I can come up with.

NO SCHOOL FOR A WHOLE MONTH!

Just think about West Coast winters, caroling parties and friends you haven't seen in months.

Hot chocolate, gingerbread cookies, steamed milk with vanilla, beef (or in your case, vegetable and kale, Stew with mashed potatoes)...

Chocolate oranges, candy canes, cranberry flavoured ginger ale, baking 30 batches of cookies while singing along to Elvis's Christmas CDs, mint-chocolate hershey's kisses, chocolate covered marshamallow santas, Champagne with cassis in...

And the inedibles - Christmas, presents (for me and others), light covered trees and houses, flannel jammies, the warm spot on the floor where the cat has been, The Sound of Music, the smell of fir, scented candles, and lots of unstenchy candles, Santa Clause, Toot & Puddle's "I'll be Home for Christmas" book, revisiting your Xmas ornaments which are packed away 11 months of the year...

Not having to shave your legs nearly as often. Stomping around in big winter boots. Watching a blizzard from your warm cozy indoor vantage point. Mocking Victoria when the whole city shuts down because of a wee bit of snow.

And my red mittens with the fold back thing that turns them into fingerless gloves for getting out one's bus pass. Those babies rock.

No, I love food and Christmas...

I hate everything weather-related about winter. I also hate how winter food is always so fattening.

But hey, winter brings you back to Victoria, presents to my door, cookies to my oven... those bits are good.

NO SPIDERS.

Also, eggnog. And frosty breath. And wool skirts. And tights. And candy canes. And It's a Wonderful Life.

LIES. We totally still have spiders. If it's too cold anywhere for spiders it should be in Canada. BAH.

But: you're never too warm for tea and cookies, in winter! That rules.

I think it's my favorite thing about winter. Ever. Because our house? IN late summer & early fall? It's like the Seattle Metro Spider Invitational. NOT GOOD for the arachnophobic.

I have seen a couple of wee daddy longlegs, but they don't bother me at all. Oddly.

I have to second Jaci's "not sweating". That kinda rules, too.

I don't think I can do that right now. I just walked home from UofT (where I picked up the rough tracks of my demo, oh lord), and I wanted to kill myself. My fingers aren't working properly because they were cold to the point of pain, despite wearing decent leather gloves. But let's see....what do I love about winter??

this is hard....

I don't really *love anything about it....

In the long long ago I loved that my horses would get their winter coats and be super shaggy and adorable with all the extra fur. That was cute. But it also meant that it was freezing and I was cleaning out stalls at 7am freezing my ass off.

I love watching people fall down because they're wearing ridiculous high heels :)

I love old christmas movies a lot (though I could watch those anytime, really).

I love that I no longer live in Fort Erie where you inevitably get snowed in. So, I love living in a Toronto apartment where I never have to lay hands on a shovel :)

I love really warm sweaters and curling up on the couch all warm and cozy with a cup of tea when it's freezing out.

That's all I've got.

Snow! Pretty fluffy snowflakes and stretches of untouched sparkly snow on the ground.

Clear cold nights were you can see the stars.

The smell of the air on a cold, crisp night. Especially if there are stars out.

The sound of snow underfoot -- fresh snow, not sludge.

Getting to pull out all my woolly sweaters and long heavy coats and scarves (see, it's okay to knit myself twenty million of them!) and wear lots of dark jewel tones.

The sight of bare trees with every twig coated in ice and glittering like something fairy-spun of crystal.

Seeing my breath rising in white clouds.

Erk! Not good. Here's hoping it comes back on posthaste.

And I'm making me want to cozy up in sweaters and hats, too. I am settling for a fleecy blanket -- which is, to be fair, not so much settling for anything, because big fleecy blankets are also a wintry joy.

When I was younger and had to walk 1/2 mile to the bus stop (uphill both ways, sorry, it started to sound like I was 80) - I loved to crunch on the dirt that turned into icicles.

This year I'm happy to live in a well-insulated home, as my last four years in Indiana were spent huddling under blankets on my couch and covering windows with comforters.

Also, I made a little squee this morning as I had to decide which of my cute knitted and crocheted scarves to wear!!!

Hats, mittens, scarves, getting to buy yarn and make even more scarves, steaming chai, peppermint mocha at Starbucks, seeing my breath become frost in front of me, wreaths in windows, single candles in dormer windows, cheesy Christmas displays, watching White Christmas, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Island of Misfit Toys, and of course, A Christmas Story on TV, blankets, excuses to make and force cookies and cakes on friends, wrapping Christmas presents, the tiny stockings for my cats.

Okay, I'm going to shut up now. :)
