I love Mountain Equipment Co-op, I really do. But I always feel like such a poser when I'm in there, like the outdoor sporty police are going to come flying by in their fleece and hiking boots, and holler "You! You've never been on the side of a mountain in your life! You've only ever been camping once and you brought your pillow! Your idea of outdoor sports is drinking games on the patio!"
Luckily I made it in and out without anyone taking away my membership card, and I am now the proud owner of non-cotton things to wear while running. So now I can live in fear of someone sprinting after me, shouting "You! You're not a real runner! Hand over the PolarTec and no-one gets hurt!"

Date: 2004-10-22 01:04 pm (UTC)In fact, I bought this shirt in green (on sale), and I think possibly these tights. Also another shirt that seems like it would be good to layer. They all feel rather light, but our instructor seems to feel that's what we'll need, even in the freezing cold winter that will be hitting us soon. So we'll see. I think it's all about experimentation at this point.

Date: 2004-10-22 02:08 pm (UTC)Tights will keep you warm enough if it isn't wet or windy. Wet is sometimes just fine too, but I've found that windy can be a problem if I'm only wearing my tights. I tend to buy my running gear from Sporthill. If they ship to where you are, check them out at the end of January/early February when they have their annual big huge sale.
As a chesty and overweight runner, I feel like a fraud when I go to the running shoe stores too. But I gave up caring about anything other than whether they paid attention and brought me the right kind of shoes, and so far I've not had any issues. Except when I forget to dress for running. Must wear sports bra when trying out running shoes!
