I am a little overly excited about the fact that I can go home right after work. You'd think that having just had 3 days off I'd be capable of being separated from the couch for a few hours, but apparently not. Especially considering that the original plan was to take advantage of the night off, and go get my hair cut. It just couldn't compete with the lure of home, proper dinner, and lounging, though.

[livejournal.com profile] vestra and I have decided to make the supreme sacrifice in order to save money ($100 for cable and internet? Gah!) and lose our extended cable.

Which means no more What Not To Wear. No more Clean Sweep. No more late Saturday nights of sex worker documentaries and "educational" sex shows. No more worst videos of the 80s. No more eternal showings of Miss Congeniality (not that I'm all that upset about this one here).

Most of all, no more hours and hours of Food Network. Which, to be honest, is probably a good thing. It does feel a little like we're swimming against the tide here, though - the world is running toward digital cable, HDTV, 200+ channels, recognition of cable shows, and we're dropping back to just the basic networks. The woman on the phone at Rogers sounded a little stunned by the concept.

It's all good, though, thanks to the wonder that is TV on DVD. This weekend included the inaugural watching of West Wing Season 1. *love*

Completely off-topic, we also saw Garden State, which I also love. Is there a name for that kind of movie? Because that's exactly my kind of movie. I never know how to answer the "favourite kind of movie" question, because neither comedy or drama really covers it, but "movie where there's not a lot of plot, but people have interesting conversations and there's good characterization and wonky filming techniques and clever references" is a little long.

People here at work look at me strangely when I say "I don't get the channel that show is on", and then even more strangely when they realize I don't have cable at all. And then again, when I tell them I'm all over TV on DVD. But man, do I miss TLC.

I really want to see Garden State. One day. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Sometimes those movie questions have an option for "art films", which to me sounds like it means porn, or more specifically foreign porn from the 70s, but it's close enough for me. :)

This sort of thing has happened to me too. I have cable here because it's included in the rent but otherwise I am anti-cable. People phone to try to give me deals on satellite dishes or fancy cable, and I have to tell them that I don't have cable at all and prefer it that way. They seem shocked at the idea.

Silly people.

We don't have cable either. As a matter of fact, we're so rural that we can't even get cable out here. And we don't get basic network TV without a satellite dish. So I feel you on the TV thing.

And I can't tell you how thankful I am for TV on DVD!

What channel does basic cable go up to?

You can come over on Fridays and watch WNTW at my house - you won't get home until midnight, though!

I (and Netflix) call these types of movies Independent Films, unless they do really well, and then they get crammed into one of those other categories.

I don't even have TV. I like it that way, but I must admit it cuts me off from roughly 50% of conversation with casual acquaintances.

*whine* I am jealous of you and everyone else that has seen Garden State. I badly want to see this film but I have no idea when it's going to open in Saskatoon, if at all. But I have the soundtrack (which is terrific), Garden State wallpaper on my laptop, and Zach Braff's blog syndicated to my LJ. I am a geek. A big ol' whiny geek.
