Since
vestra has gone off to Cobourg for the summer, I was fringing alone yesterday. I almost went home, too, after getting downtown, because when I got off the subway I was in the middle of a huge thunderstorm. Walking around lightening does not make me happy. Luckily, the whole thing ended a half hour after it started, so I could head off to my show.
Showboatin'
A super hyper play from England about the price of fame. Pretty funny material, and great performances, but there were some long pauses between scenes, which seems particularly silly in a show that's under an hour, and some of the scenes fell flat. However, it was all redeemed by the outfit that the lead was wearing, consisting of hot pink spandex leggings, big white socks, baby pink stiletto heels with enormous bows, a shiny pink corset-type thing, a sparkly silver choker, a chiffon pink "skirt", and a hip belt of pink and white circles. Very scary, very funny.
Fringe Show: A Love Story
Two men perform a show (not in pjs, which, honestly, I was somewhat expecting) about performing a Fringe show on the Canadian circuit. Full of every fringe cliche imaginable, from improv and audience participation, to a discussion of the importance of the beer tent during the fringe. Very funny, especially for someone like me who has been fringing for so many years.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention! At the second show, they sang a song about TJ! They were doing a bit about press releases, talking about how there's one sure way to get attention for your Fringe show, and that's to mention the magic words "TJ Dawe". And then they sang a song about him. Hee.
That's it for the moment. I should have time for a couple more shows next weekend after I send my parents off, assuming everything isn't sold out. Still, I managed 14 shows in 5 days, so I think I did okay.
