Yay, Fringe!  First night last night.  Our first show of our carefully planned schedule was at 7, so in true Fringe fashion I got there exactly at six to buy tickets...and of course I was the only one there, and the first person in the line-up to get in.  The line behind me grew quickly, though, so I think it was a good idea.  The show may have even sold out, which is pretty impressive for a first night.

Sleepless: A New Musical

This is the new show from the people who did Top Gun: The Musical last year, which I never got to see because it was the break-out hit of the Fringe, and sold out every time I tried to go.  Which is why we went on the first night, and why we got there so early.  I have to say, I was a little disappointed - it was good, but not as brilliant as I was expecting.  The songs were great, sometimes extremely clever, and the performances were mostly excellent, but the book was a bit weak, and the energy dropped during the scenes.  Still, it was fun, and there were a couple of great moments, including one very silly song about spices that came complete with a brilliant dance routine.

The show let out at 8:29, and in a moment of complete randomness, going against the schedule, we ran the to the venue right beside it, and just managed to get into the 8:30 show there.  Score!

7 Sins

Oh my GOD, this guy was funny.  I just wanted to bring him home with me and have him tell me stories all day every day.  Nominally bits based around the seven deadly sins, it was basically just an excuse for performer James Judd to pull material from his crazy life, including bits on 5th grade book report competitions, "hardly working" at AT&T, and being a gay man in a brothel in China.  Hyper, quick-talking, and a fantastic performer.

After that, we didn't even bother trying to make it to the 10:30 show, which was all the way at the other end of the Fringe circuit.  Which is fine, because I think we'd both pretty much changed our minds about going to it.  And now we have a blank where we had originally planned to see 7 Sins, and can see something else!  Whee.

Ha, you were at Sleepless? So was I - first show I reviewed! Where were you sitting? What did you think? And how was 7 Sins?

You should have stayed at the Tarragon for the 10:30 show in the Mainspace (Free/Fall) because it turned out to be excellent. There was hardly any audience, though, which is sad.

Ahem, I'm sorry, I suppose I could READ posts in their entirety before commenting...duh.

Edmonton has a Fringe festival that I tried to go to every year when I was living there... I really miss it actually. Since I've moved to Ontario, I haven't really figured out where/when to find one of similar quality.

It's the one Edmonton thing that I can really brag about without embellishment.
