I think Christmas is actually finally officially over. My friends went back to England yesterday (I miiiiissss you, Kit!), so today has felt very empty of plans and planning. No, wait, I do have a plan: I plan to read. And possibly catch up with my flist, although I'm so far behind that the prospect is a little scary.
It was such a fantastic Christmas, though. Full of time spent with wonderful people, excellent food, many many presents, and games. Hours and hours spent playing games. Is there anything better?
Christmas eve we did end up going to Mona Lisa Smile, which was actually pretty cute, despite the presence of Julia Roberts, who is just getting more annoying. Maggie Gyllenhaal is totally my Secret Pretend Girlfriend, though. Therefore,
vestra and I are just tag-teaming the Gyllenhaal family.
The stockings on Christmas morning were unbelievably enormous, just as I predicted. I laboured long and hard to stuff all my parents' gifts into a nylon leg each, but they wimped out with me and just gave me a full-on pair of nylons. And Kit and Dave ended up with 2 stockings each, because Kit's mom had sent stuff out too. Then, breakfast (ginger scones, scrambled eggs, fruit salad) and more presents. So many presents. I might even tell you what they are someday.
In the afternoon the three of us escaped the madness of the parental open house and went for a long walk along the waterfront, which was lovely in one direction, and wet and very cold in the other. Brr.
Dinner was great - we had 12 people and much food. Oh, and a small burning centerpiece incident - there was a thing with candles and fake greenery on a side table, and at one point someone noticed that the whole thing was engulfed in flames, so my mother grabbed it and threw it out the window, then rushed downstairs to cover it in water. The charred carcass is still lying on the lawn.
Boxing Day we had people over to play games, including this completely fantastic game that my parents got for Christmas called Apples to Apples. I've played it now with 3 different groups of people, and it's been hilarious every time. I'm definitely picking up a copy when I get back to Toronto so I can harass everyone I know and make them play it with me. The premise is that each person gets a hand of cards with random things on them, like Marilyn Monroe, spit, Chicago and puking, and then the judge for the round reads out a card that has a descriptive word like "sweet", and each person has to throw in the cards in their hand that match that word, and then the judge picks the one that fits best. It gets silly very fast, though, because you have to think fast, and often end up pulling out cards that have nothing to do with the topic, and then trying to justify them. We also (on another night) played MooT, which is a brilliant word and language game that comes out of Vancouver, and which everyone who knows me is eventually subjected to. There are some example questions on the website.
There was even one night where the four of us that have been friends since university (Kit,
vestra,
sarcasma, and myself) managed to hang out together again, complete with significant others and some parents. It really was a wonderful Christmas.
