listersgirlYou may notice (okay, you probably won't, because you probably don't analyze what I watch, but if you did, you might notice) that there are a lot of older movies on this list, which is unusual for me. This is because of 2 things: 1, I have this giant Zip backlog, so I decided that rather than pick and choose movies, I'd just bump up everything on my list that's from before 1990. And a few TV things, because that's most what I want to watch these days. 2, I've been following the Popcorn Dialogues podcasts, which are Jennifer Crusie and another romance novelist watching and analyzing romantic comedies, 5 from each era (I think) that are supposed to be good. The podcast is quite interesting - they're rating them in terms of how good they are specifically as romantic comedies, with scores for romance, comedy, and structure, with the idea being to learn what makes a romantic comedy really work. It's intended for romance novelists, but I've been quite enjoying their commentary, and adding some of the highly rated movies to my Zip list - and since they started with the earliest movies, so did I.
Absolute Beginners Maybe it's a product of its era, but eh, I was just not that interested.
Andy Richter Controls the Universe Fun! Holds up very well, unlike some sitcoms. There were some brilliant bits.
The Bourne Supremacy & The Bourne Ultimatum I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed the first in this series, and then someone referenced it, so I Zipped the next 2. Which were also enjoyable. Although the handheld filming style made me a bit dizzy after a while, so I had to stop watching some of the faster moving scenes. I miss Julia Stiles.
Desk Set Loved this! It might have something to do with the fact that it was about librarians at a broadcasting centre, but still. It was charming and funny and the scene on the roof with Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant was awesome.
Despicable Me I'm not generally a fan of animated movies, but I was sucked in my the little ad clips, which were weird and quirky. Sadly, the movie didn't live up to the ads for me - there were some cute bits, but a lot of it was awfully standard. Fun, but not awesome.
It Happened One Night I enjoyed this, but didn't love it. There were some cute romantic comedy moments. I just don't always connect with stuff from this era, I find.
Nine Meh. I was disappointed, because most of the singing was pretty bad, and in a musical, that's definitely important! It was also far too angsty.
No Impact Man Real life story of a NYC man who tried, with his family, to live with as little environmental impact as possible, while still living in a high rise in Manhattan. I wish I'd just read the book - I don't feel this doc, interesting as the subject was, gained anything at all from being a movie. I also wanted
Plan 9 From Outer Space I think, if you're going to deliberately watch a terrible movie, you really need to watch it with other people for the entertainment value. Otherwise it's just a really bad movie.
Scott Pilgrim vs the World I feel like I talked about this before, but maybe it was elsewhere. Anyway, I loved the movie, loved all the Toronto spotting (and as Toronto, even!), and thought Scott Pilgrim himself was a whiny ass. I would totally see it again, though.
Scrooged Okay, fine I admit it, it really is a classic Christmas movie. I don't know why I was so reluctant to watch it for so long. :)
Sherlock Holmes I think I would have liked this more if I hadn't watched it right after the BBC Sherlock reboot, which I adored. I liked the character stuff, and the interplay between Sherlock and Holmes, but found it relied a little too much on action sequences, which kind of bored me. I liked it enough to watch the next one, though.
Top Hat It's sad that fluffy fun dance movies like this don't exist any more. I mean, as a movie, forgettable, but Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers are so wonderful together.
What's Up, Doc? I can see, technically, how this is a funny movie and a great example of a romantic comedy, but it's just totally not my style.
