I experienced that sort of thing when I got back from spending a month in Australia a few years ago.
People here seemed so *quiet*, and it kind of weirded me out that complete strangers weren't trying to identify my accent, and weren't asking me "So, mate .. you're a Yank are ya?"
I do miss hearing people refer to 'chooks', 'eskies', 'tinnies', 'the rego', and a 'flat white tall one' *
* chooks = chickens, eskies = styrofoam coolers, tinnies = aluminum outboard-motor-powered boats, the rego = the motor vehicle office, and flat white tall one = a large coffee, with no foamy stuff (flat), and with cream (white).
