Jan. 31st, 2008 07:05 pmLast night I ended up (somewhat last minute) going to see the touring production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. It was FABULOUS.
My boss knows the production manager for the theatre it's playing at, and she emailed her in the afternoon to see if she could find (free) seats for us - we hung out in her office until the doors opened, and then we took the long route through the bowels of the theatre until we arrived at an empty box. Then we had an amusing conversation about how to find the bathrooms, because of course we didn't have any tickets. By the time it passed through "go back downstairs, no-one will care" into "be sure to turn left and follow the red carpet, otherwise you'll end up in the pit", we were happy to assure her that we'd be totally fine. Hee.
Anyway, the show was great, so much fun, I couldn't stop laughing. And if you're wondering, yes, it is a musical about a spelling bee. With people spelling. And guest spellers from the audience! One of ours was Rick Mercer, which was awesome (and the reason why my boss' friend snuck us in last night specifically). I love the score (William Finn!), but it's one of those shows that really benefits from the staging and the surrounding bits of the show. I think I'm going to try to go again (although I'll probably have to pay this time, sadly).
