T.C. Boyle Drop City

A pretty entertaining book about a California commune that begins to fall apart, so the core members decide to move to the wilds of Alaska, where they clash with the hardcore "mountain men". It was a little slow in parts, but the characters were great.

Roddy Doyle Paula Spencer

This is the sequel to my favourite Roddy Doyle book, The Woman Who Walked Into Doors. Here, Paula Spencer is living life as a recovering alcoholic, trying to rebuild her family and finding new joy in ordinary things like a cup of coffee at a bakery. What makes it worth reading is the writing, and Doyle's unflinching view of reality.

Tim Flannery The Weather Makers

It's a horror story! Okay, really it's a fantastic book about global warming and climate change, but it's pretty damn terrifying. Also, the author is Australian, so there's more than a North American perspective, which is great. The worst part were the predictions from scientists of what will happen if nothing changes - how quickly certain coastal cities will be under water, and things like that.

Coleen Gleason The Rest Falls Away

It's a combination historical romance, and vampire slayer novel. No, seriously. And it was pretty awesome - how can you lose with a book that describes how the heroine slayer's maid paints and decorates her stakes so they can be part of her hair decorations during soirées?

Terry Pratchett Maskerade

I think this is the first Pratchett I ever read, back in the day. It's about opera and theatre and the witches -- how could I not pick it up?

Julia Quinn Brighter Than the Sun

I...don't remember anything about this, other than that it was my reward book last weekend - the book that I got to read for a set amount of time after I did each chore on my to-do list. And it worked very well, so I must have enjoyed it.

Also I re-read Chuck Klosterman's Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs, because he is awesome. And I read (mostly, and then skimmed the rest, because I was bored) a YA novel that I picked up entirely because a character had the same name as me, first and last. Let me tell you, I was totally disturbed every time she was introduced. Because that's my name! It's also further proof that my (first) name is ridiculously popular, if it can be used for a high school student right now, and not feel anachronistic.
