Emma Donoghue The Woman Who Gave Birth To Rabbits

I love this woman. Love her! This book is a series of short stories all based on interesting or odd pieces of history from England. They're fascinating and charmingly written, and very engrossing. I don't normally like short stories but these felt just right. The other books of hers that I've read are also excellent: Hood was the story of a relationship that tore at my soul, and Slammerkin was historical, smart and sassy. Er, some word that means something like sassy, but has a bit more class to it.

Stephen Fry The Hippopotamus and Stars' Tennis Balls

I'd read both these books before, but Stephen Fry is one of my favourite authors, so I picked up copies for my recent trip. I love Fry for his language and irreverence, and because he so blatantly throws his characters out there for you to love or hate. And because when I read his books, at times I can barely catch my breath, I'm laughing so hard.

Bill Fitzhugh Cross Dressing

Sadly, not actually about cross dressing, at least not in the way the title implied. I picked it up from the library because this author kept showing up on my Amazon recommendations, based on my acknowledged love for Christopher Moore and Matt Ruff. It's the story of Dan, an ad executive who takes on his twin brother's identity as a priest when his brother dies, hence the cross dressing. The book was funny, but I really couldn't get into it until about halfway through. I'm going to try again, though, with another book by the same author, just in case he's really entirely brilliant and this was the weak entry.

Hmm, I seem to have a lot of authors starting with G, so I think I'll end here for now. But there'll be more, I promise.
