five for Friday
A topical Friday Five:
1. How are you planning to spend the summer?
Sadly, the same way that I spend the rest of the year: working. I miss the delineation of the seasons that school brings -- I mean, I've worked at least part-time every summer since grade 8, so it's not about not working, but about that change, and then the change of starting school again in the fall.
2. What was your first summer job?
The summer between grades 8 and 9 I worked as a dishwasher at my dad's restaurant (and was paid -- this wasn't forced family labour). I worked pretty much full-time, except for the 2 weeks when we went over to the island as usual (the benefit of working for my dad was that he automatically found someone to cover for those 2 weeks, since obviously I was going on holiday with my parents). I have to say, I hated that job and would never again be a dishwasher. I used to dream every night about washing the floors at the end of my shift. I think it's because of that job that I kind of don't like to touch food (although I still love to eat it).
Sometime around then I also started working at the music store where my mom worked, but it was only very occasionally until the next summer.
3. If you could go anywhere this summer, where would you go?
I'd love to go to New York again, but not in the summer. It'd be too much like the horrendous weather I'm living in now. I'd like to go somewhere where I could be outside without burning or getting too hot -- somewhere breezy where I could sit outside and read my book and be given silly girly drinks. Or Sweden. I always want to go to Sweden.
4. What was your worst vacation ever?
I don't think I've ever really had a bad vacation. I've been on some unimpressive band trips, but that's not quite the same thing. Nope, generally I've been a very satisfied vacationer. Although, now that I think about it, there was one summer trip to the island that was far far too hot, and everyone we knew ended up showing up at the same time, instead of one after the other like we'd planned, so there were about 16 people in one tiny little 2-room cabin. That wasn't so much fun.
5. What was your best vacation ever?
Possibly the 3 1/2 day speed vacation in NYC in 1997, where we managed to not only see New York (Central Park, Empire State Building, Bloomies, a very rain-soaked Chinatown), but also 5 shows. In 3 1/2 days!
Runners up would be Italy last year, Disneyland with friends 5 or so years ago and any variety of summers at the cabin.
Vacations are wonderful things, I tell you. Thank god I'm leaving for one tomorrow. See you all in a week or so, and Happy Canada Day in advance!
