Movies

Alice in Wonderland: I ranted about the 3Dness of this already, but I enjoyed the movie quite a lot despite that. Visually entertaining.

American Teen: This was an interesting documentary following the lives of a few teenagers from different groups during their senior year. Made me super glad I'm not a teenager, wow.

Big Bang Theory (season 1): I watched this knowing that it supposedly gets much funnier and enjoyed it with that in mind.

Big Love (season 4): I don't usually talk about current TV here, but I feel it necessary to mention that I couldn't make it through this season, despite loving previous seasons. Too many plotlines! Meh.

The Brothers Bloom: About 2 con artist brothers, and the woman they attempt to con. I liked this, although there were a few too many false endings. I was definitely caught up in the spirit of the movie, though.

Caché: So, this was clearly a movie intended to be watched on the big screen - a lot of the action was quite far away, and in fact I completely missed the "what, really? what does that mean?" ending because it was small and in the corner of the screen. But it was still a curiously fascinating movie, about a family who discovers they are being watched by an unknown person, and what that does to them.

Castle (season 1): Nathan Fillion is fantastic, I love the character of Castle and his ridiculous enthusiasm, I think the actress who plays the detective is quite wooden, and I can't take seriously any of the supposed chemistry between them, or any time she makes a flirty comment. Doesn't work! But Nathan Fillion makes up for it.

Devil Wears Prada: Fun stuff. I love a movie that starts with a montage.

District 9: I quite enjoyed this, more than I expected to. I liked the ordinariness of the aliens being on earth, and I loved the scenes of the ministry attempting to figure out how to deal with them.

Duplicity: Fun, but not spectacular. I do love a good caper movie, and I liked that I was never quite sure who was telling the truth. Didn't totally buy Julia Roberts, though.

Fame (2009): Hee hee hee, wow this is not a good movie at all, but so entertaining. So many storylines, how could I ever care about anyone? For a while it looked like it was going to be entirely a movie of montages, which I am totally in favour of.

Food Inc: I think if you hadn't read any books on the food industry, this would be quite eye-opening - it's well crafted, and covers a lot of the salient points in a dramatic fashion. But it didn't tell me anything new.

Precious: As I said before, incredibly touching and horrifying and powerful. And worth watching.

The Squid and the Whale: It was fine, I guess. I liked the dialogue and the depiction of a time and place (Brooklyn in the early 80s, I think, although I could be totally wrong). But I didn't really feel like it had any kind of arc.

State of Play (BBC series): Totally excellent. See it! I loved all the twisty integrating plotlines. A political thriller about a dead research assistant, the politician she worked for, and his journalist friend, and it's so much better than I can describe it.

State of Play (American movie): After seeing the miniseries, we were curious about the movie. It was actually pretty good for a 2 hour remake of a 6 hour miniseries. The casting seemed a bit off in places, but Helen Mirren was fab, and going for military instead of energy worked excellently for an American movie. Not as good as the original, but not terrible either.

Suspicious River: This should have been the movie made for me, since it starred two of my favourite Canadian actors, Callum Keith Rennie and Molly Parker. But it was super creepy, with a twist ending that was so far over the top that it was both horrifying and ludacris.

30 Rock (season 3): I remember nothing about this. I assume I enjoyed it? Let's go with that.

True Blood (season 1): Which we abandoned due to boredom (ours) and ridiculousness (theirs). I may have mentioned this.

Veronica Mars: Rewatched all 3 seasons with [livejournal.com profile] vestra. Awesomesauce. She too has been indoctrinated into the Way of the Logan.

Weirdsville: This was not nearly as weird and awesome as it thought it was. I turned it off halfway through (something which I'm doing with increasing frequency these days - I think I'm becoming harder to entertain).
