Booktalk: The Lockout Edition (Part 1 in a series)

In the beginning, there was time not at work. And a couch. Thus did the reading begin.

Steve Almond The Evil B. B. Chow and Other Stories

This is the same guy who wrote Candyfreak, so I had high hopes. Unfortunately this book of short stories was pretty much meh - the writing was good, but most of the stories didn't have much behind them. Somewhat of a disappointment.

Mark Dunn Ibid

Did you read Ella Minnow Pea? You should. This is another very cute book based on a literary conceit -- in this case the book is just the footnotes, because the actual supposed book was "lost". And we all know footnotes are awesome. Plus it's the life story of a three-legged man. How can you go wrong?

Barbara Hambly Dragonsbane

This was actually pretty good -- I picked it up at the Chicklit book swap last year and was trying to read it so I could send it back again this year. But actually, it was fairly decent fantasy, with interesting characters, a quest, and enough scheming and plotting to last through three books. A bit heavy on the dragon worship, though.

Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner Freakonomics

Ever wondered why drug dealers live with their mothers? Awesome. I love people whose brains can follow those twisted, creative paths. Sadly, it's been long enough now that I can't remember many of the details of the book, but the section on the names and how a name can influence people's perceptions was fascinating. Read this book!

Connie Mason Laird of Stonehaven

Cheesy historical romance! Perfect after walking around the block for 6 hours.

Jon Stewart America (the Book)

Oh Jon Stewart and Daily Show writers. Why do you have to be on so late at night? Luckily I had this book to make me laugh in my time of sorrows. There's also a tiny possibility I may have actually learned something (shhh!).

Stay tuned as I learn to read and walk at the same time, thus making picket duty much more bearable, if somewhat more dangerous.
