listersgirl: (drink to that)
I like making resolutions - I like the idea that I will have goals, and maybe along the way I will become an AWESOME PERSON - but I really feel like I haven't had time to think about them, and any list I put together becomes a to-do list ("I resolve to do the dishes tonight!" Really? Okay then!)

So I thought, why should I do all the work of making my own resolutions when I have the whole internet in front of me? Why not get the internet to make resolutions for me?

Make a New Year's Resolution for me! Or more than one, if you like. Anonymous commenting is ON, so use this as your opportunity to mold me into the person you'd like me to be. :)

So I have this barley...

Basically, when I made the soup a while back, I (as one of the stupid things I did while making that soup) forgot that I was only making a half recipe, and cooked the full amount of barley. So now I have some cooked barley left over that I don't know what to do with.

Anybody have any barley thoughts? That aren't soup, preferably, because I'm still making my way through the last batch of soup.

(I just remembered that I did the exact same thing last time I made the soup, and I had the same leftover container of barley that I had no idea what to do with. I should write something in the book so I don't do it YET AGAIN.)

While I'm on the subject of books, does anyone know of a site where I can track new releases from my favourite authors? I'm looking for something that will email me when certain authors have a new book coming out, because I'm just not in bookstores as much as I used to be, and I keep finding out about things months after they've come out.

Question for you all: if someone wanted to create a slideshow of photos on a Mac (but not through the internet), preferably with the ability to set the length of time that each photo would stay up, what program would you use? What if it were a PC?

I...feel like this is totally obvious, and I'm just missing it completely.

Has anyone found a session saver-type add-on for Firefox 2.0? I'm hoping I'm just blind in not being able to find one.

Welcome to another installation of Rachel asks the stupid questions! Topic of the day: PODCASTS (as precipitated by [livejournal.com profile] sallym)

No, I'm not going to ask how you listen to podcasts. I want to know when you listen to podcasts, where you listen to podcasts.

Because, see, there's all sorts of stuff out there that looks totally interesting. But, you know, I don't really listen to the radio (ironic, isn't it?), mostly because I can't listen to the radio at the same time as I read (not without completely tuning the radio out), and I can't just sit there and listen to the radio without getting completely restless. So I keep getting excited about things, and then never listening to them.

Am I missing something? Do you all (at least all of you who listen to podcasts) just sit there and listen? Do you listen while doing something else? I feel extremely old and uncool, which is not exactly news, but still.

I need advice from people with more sartorial sense than me. Which means, well, all of you.

I bought a dark brown dressy dress. I guess this means I can't wear black shoes and/or bag, right? And if I buy shoes in some sort of funky colour (which is what I was thinking I'd do, if I can find anything quickly enough), what do I do about a bag? Does it have to match?

You can tell I don't do the dressing up thing very frequently (or well). Help me please!

Help!

My landlord is threatening me with things if I don't get renter's insurance (I know, I know, I should have it already, but I put it off and then forgot about it because I am LAME). So, um, how do I do this? Anyone have any suggestions of where I should go for insurance? Or even just where I should *look* for insurance places? I am feeling very flaily here.

Hi, can I ask a stupid question?

Can you transfer playlists from one iTunes to another? Meaning one computer to another. Assuming they have the same songs.

I have no reason to actually need to know this at this point, except that I always think obsessively far into the future, and at some point within the next two years I'm probably going to have to get a new computer, and maybe I don't want to bother building complicated (but entertaining) playlists if they're going to disappear.

February!

I don't know why I'm excited, though. It's not like February is the most exciting of months. In fact, around here February is pretty much the least favourite of months, what with the cold and the snow and the lack of holidays. Still, for some reason I'm rather fond of February this year, at least for the moment.

I did really well on my January resolution. Gold star for me! I mean, I actually went to bed earlier, and got more sleep, for the majority of days. I'm still tired all the time, but I think that's more a function of when I have to get up and the fact that my body refuses to accept that 6am is morning. I'll take what I can get, though.

My February resolution is to write more of my silly NaNovel. Because I was doing so not particularly well, and then I just gave up! That's not on. I mean, the giraffes had just shown up. So, yeah.

I tried my humidifier last night (See? I can buy things in less than a year. Sometimes). I don't know if it made any difference, but that was just the first night. It was pretty loud at first, but I think I got used to it -- it's hard to tell, because I wake up so often these days. It could have been the noise, or it could have just been me. I have high hopes, though.

Finally: Hypothetically, if I were to take a trip to, say, London* and environs, what would be the nicest time of year to visit?

And I'm done.

*England, that is, not Ontario.

Question: If I'm going to my boss's apartment for a staff Christmas party that I don't really want to go to, do I have to take a hostess gift? And what can I buy (quickly, because I have no time today) that isn't food or wine?

Now on to the interesting* stuff.

Today's BPAL: Bastet

Bast, Ubasti, Ailuros, Ba-en-Aset. Represented as both a domestic cat and a fierce lioness, she truly evidences traits of both. She is the Mother of All Cats, Goddess of Sensuality, Fertility, and a guardian and protector of women. She is also one of the Eyes of Ra, and in that aspect is an Avenging Goddess, seeking retribution and punishing enemies of her people. Luxuriant amber, warm Egyptian musk, fierce saffron and soft myrrh, almond, cardamom and golden lotus.

This is nice. Very nice. It smells almost like a mild cinnamon on first application -- warm and spicy, but not too strong. On drydown, the almond comes through a bit more, while the spices linger. I'm very pleased, other than the fact that I had a bit of an allergic reaction when I put it on my neck (I went bright red on that spot, and it was a bit itchy). I'll just have to be careful where I apply it; I had no problems on my wrists.

Yesterday's BPAL: Sudha Segara

Named after the primordial ocean of milk where Lord Vishnu reclines upon the thousand-headed Naga. Sweet milk and warm, healing ginger with a touch of golden honey and our blend of Ambrosia. (Gender neutral)

Mmm, pretty! It's sweet without being candy-like. Sadly it disappears almost immediately on me. In fact, this was also Tuesday's BPAL, but it faded so quickly that I couldn't write about it. Yesterday I put on much more, and it lasted through the morning, but by lunch it was gone, leaving just a vague sweetness. Too bad.

*To me, at least.

Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] fox1013! I hope it's spectacular, and full of friends and presents and birthday cookies.

And now a question for the collective wisdom:

Does anyone know of a cheat that would let you friends-lock all your back entries at once? (It's not for me, in case you were wondering.)

Finally, my socks keep sliding around so that the seam hits me right on the side of my baby toe, and it hurts, and I can't find my favourite pen. Today is just a day for petty irritations. What's bothering you today?

I have recently been the target of much mockery because I use Windows Media Player to listen to music. Of course, the person doing the mocking is a certified Apple freak, so it's not surprising that he would prefer iTunes.

But now I'm curious. Is one player better than the other? What about other things that are out there? I use WMP because it was there, but now I have piles of music on my computer at home and I'm thinking about playlists and things like that, and I don't want to build them all on one system only to change my mind.

So, Wise and Wonderous Interbets, pick a system for me! I am at your disposal.

Fitting 10 bagels into a freezer the size of a microwave (a freezer that incidentally is full of nuts, blueberries, ice cube trays, veggie burgers, and a very large bag of cornmeal) was not an easy task. I had to eat a bagel or two* in order to make the remainder fit. Shame, that.

Of course, I realized that there would have been much more room if my freezer weren't completely encrusted in ice. Which means I need to defrost it. Which is made more complicated by the fact that it's one of those lameass "freezer compartments", inside the fridge.

Has anyone had any experience defrosting these? I read the instructions on the back of the door, and it seems like I'm going to have to leave the fridge off, and the fridge door open. Which means the rest of my food will...go bad? How long does it take to defrost the fridge anyway? I suppose it'll be that much quicker in this heat, but the food will also spoil that much faster. Maybe I'll just see how much of it I can eat before the weekend, and do it then.

*I had a poppy seed one with veggie ham, avocado and sundried tomato havarti for dinner, and a sesame one with cream cheese and black currant spread for...dessert? Shut up.

My laptop (which is running Windows XP, I believe) has been freezing up 2 or 3 times a night for the past couple of weeks. Sometimes even when I'm in the middle of typing a word, which, argh. And then I have to reboot. Sigh.

Does anyone have any idea why it might be doing this?

I realize this is obnoxiously vague, but I'm just looking for a hint of direction here, so I can decide if it's something that is fixable or not.

Help?

I downloaded Firefox (because I am a sheep!). Can someone tell me what's so exciting about tabbed browsing? I can't see how it's any different from having multiple windows open, but they seem so very excited about it.

Does anyone know if there's something vaguely Mapquest-like, but with the ability to map multiple locations on one map?

I could have sworn Mapquest did this, but I can't seem to find that option anymore.

Those of you who use Gmail for your comment notification, is it threading properly yet? Do you like it?

My fastmail account, which I use for all online stuff, is running out of space, even though I have barely anything saved there. It's irritating. So I thought I might change to my Gmail account, but I remember hearing there were problems related to LJ.

Help!

I have two stupid questions about IE that maybe someone can answer:

1) Is there a way to set it so that the default is that links, when clicked, open in a new window?

2) Is there a way to designate it so that any new windows automatically open up maximized?

I suppose I should be thankful that these are my most pressing problems this morning, but it's irritating me that I can't figure them out myself.

Dear brilliant collective mind,

Does anyone still have links to the sites where you can make the wee avatars, like the one in my icon here, or the full body doll-like ones, or the various ones that are just heads?

I probably have the links saved somewhere, but I'm hoping someone else has them within quick reach. ::smiles winningly::
